I have never used authoring apps to do MPEG-2 encoding- I always opt to do that task in other environments which allow greater control and higher quality. I'll be checking Scenarist out in NYC in a couple of weeks and will see if they have finally implemented copy & paste (among other things). I don't think I can entirely give up optical media for client deliverables quite yet- but the end HAS to be out there somewhere.

They pretty much made their money suing other companies for patent infringement. At one point, Sonic, which was the company that bought the software from Daiken and did no serious development on it for years, and was eventually bought out by Rovi (Macrovision, but everyone hated them so they changed their name) had more lawyers than engineers. Lots of companies do this, but Sonic was blatant about where they drew the line between versions, and had no problem making it clear they were screwing you, so pay up if you want to be a real DVD author.Ģ) Suing competing companies out of business (Like Spruce, which is what we still use for DVD authoring, and had a far superior software package and MPEG 2 encoder).

Their business model seemed to be twofold:ġ) Structure the feature set so most versions were totally crippled, forcing you into an expensive upgrade path.
It's amazing how cheap Scenarist DVD is now - we had the "lite" version in 2000, and that cost about $3000 and did almost nothing. Don't get me started! Did they ever add Copy/Paste functionality to it? or "Save As"? Because their engineers told me that was too hard to implement. So- this really isn't a plug for Scenarist- I know there's a range of opinions on this product (price/usability), and there are still a few other (supported) options out there which may be better at fitting a particular user's needs & budget, but its widespread use in the field can't be denied, and should at least be on the list for consideration if you're shopping around- particularly at this price. 15, which is roughly 50% off list, and is down a LOT from previous pricing whispered through the years here and elsewhere ($5K+). They are offering a "cross-grade" purchase price of $795 until Dec. It's not the only tool, and not necessarily the best, nor best for everyone, but I checked with Jason about sharing this news as I feel it might be interest to some of the rest of you here (I have no business relationship with Scenarist). In doing so, I found out that Scenarist is on sale- one of the most widely-used and flagship authoring programs out there (and it's not EOL like so many others). As I do almost annually, I have recently been shopping around for BD/DVD authoring tools (some of us still slog away in optical media- for good or ill!).
